My safety net

Since my Mum died, I've felt like I've had no safety net to fall into when life has got a bit tough. I would turn to my GG at the beginning, and more recently I'll turn to my Ben. Since October 2018, I've not hidden the fact that I've been taking a special little table that literally changed my life overnight! I was having up to 5 panic attacks a day, I couldn't sleep, I was physically sick, clammy, tearful, irritable, just a bit of a mess! On these tablets, I was strong enough to say no more to the relationship I had found myself in with the boys Dad (we have a far better friendship now and I wouldn't change it for the world!) and things started falling into place. I was in my forever job, and although at the start of that job I felt as if I had bitten off more than I could chew, as soon as I started taking my magic pill I knew this was the job I wanted to be in forever - or at least until I hit retirement age! I was living in my forever home with my 3 babies and I was making it my own after saying goodbye to Ayden. Once I had been on the tablets for a few months and things were settled I joined an app called Bumble, firstly in the hope of just having a bit of fun. One of these "bits of fun" turned into a bit more and I have ended up with a beautiful baby girl and a fiancé! I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and I could not be happier or more content with what I have now. So this leads me to the reason for the blog today. I am now in a place in my life where I don't need my magic pill to balance me out. Life is calm and my safety net is all fixed and now in the form of my sister, my fiancé and a bunch of literally amazing friends. It's day 4 without the tablet completely - I originally cut it down to one every other day, and then one day on, two days off, and now I've cut it out completely. I'm dizzy and shakey, was sick 2 nights ago, but I am determined to come off my magic pill so will push on! I had a wobble in the early hours of this morning thinking I needed to take it because it's part of what makes me, me now, but I heard my Mum say "don't you dare!" So obviously I didn't and here we are! It may all change again when we come out of lockdown - this is hard to explain but having Generalised Anxiety Disorder, lockdown has been really calming for me. I completely understand how awful and worrying lockdown is for most people but for me personally it has been a time of very little worry. I've been able to keep the boys inside and with me, I haven't had to make up excuses as to why I can't meet up with people on the days where I just can't face it, I have been extremely lucky that I haven't had to worry about money (a combination of working for the council, being on maternity leave, Ben working in a key worker position, and having so many awesome family and friends to call on if needed!) Obviously there are the odd occasions where I do worry, but as a whole it's just worry, not panic - not including the fright of my life that bubba decided to give me last week!

So anyway, wish me luck, send me prayers, or positive energy, or whatever it is you believe in and here's to this next part of my journey ❤︎

Love you all x

And so the storm hits

You know those storms I was talking about in my last blog, well one has definitely hit today! Anything can trigger it, today it was talking about tattoos!

My first tattoo was one for my Dad - on my back, the words "Daddys Little Angel". Such a typical crappy, not thought about, 18 year old tattoo! I was going through  more tattoos I want once baby has arrived, and said to Ayden I wanted that one covered up but didn't know what with. I didn't know what would be special enough - I know the tattoo I'm getting for my Dad instead of the writing but just didn't want the writing anymore. So Ayden very off the cuff just said "surely a bed of roses" and that set me off - not outwardly - but inwardly the storm hit! Then I just spiralled and now it's flooding out of my eyes! So I've decided to roll with it because it's been a while, and now I'm sat here on my laptop listening to bloody Bon Jovi songs - inspiration for some pretty lyrics to put round the bed of roses I am now inevitably getting on my back!

I am a complete mess and it honestly just gets worse and worse but I know I need to get it out or it will just eat me up inside. Something else I learnt from my Mummy was to let your grief out because it will do no good trapped inside.

I need to sort myself out before Ben gets home from work because he's only ever seen me break down once in our relationship and that wasn't because of Mum but just because I had run out of crazy lady pills and couldn't cope with life by the third day. He'll hate me for saying that because he'll want to be there for me through this storm but I'm being "strong" at the moment because I'm the "adult" in the house and when he gets home I'll just sink and it's not fair on him.

There's so much that breaks me in these storms - all the things Mum has missed and will continue to miss. It was supposed to be Dan and Nicki's wedding this weekend just gone and so we went to a field near my sisters house just to get together and mark the occasion and when we came away I just felt a massive shot to the chest that she wasn't there.

She won't ever meet Ben - my rock
She won't ever meet my baby girl, or my nephew
Eric and Immy don't remember her, they don't know how special her hugs were and how they healed every hurt you could experience! Except this one..

This one she can't make better with her cuddle and I'm really struggling with that right now.

🎶 I'm feeling like a Monday but someday I'll be Saturday night 🎶

The first thing I've written since Mum died.

As the title would suggest this is the first time I've written my blog since Mum died. It's not that I've found it difficult to find things to write about but more that I know that she won't be reading it.

We haven't seen her in 860 days. That's 20640 hours since the day she said goodbye to us.  That's really hard to digest, to really fathom that it has been that long!! I still miss her morning texts, and her facebook posts, and her facetime calls, and her Sunday roasts, and her Saturday BBQs with her potato salad, and her smell, and her laugh, and her words of wisdom, and the feeling of being home wherever she was. But most of all I miss her Mummy cuddles.

There have been so many MASSIVE life changes for all 3 of us that she should have been part of, and I know everyone always says that she still is part of them but it just isn't enough on the bad days. Luckily the bad days are few and far between now but when they hit, they bloody hit. I have had some proper awful days in the 860 since she went to see my Dad, and can honestly say that without my babies and my GG I really don't know how I would have gotten through them.

Grief really is such a tragically funny thing because it goes in waves that start off really little and often, the ones that leave the foam on the sand once they've subsided that they wash away almost instantly with the next little wave, and then they become those waves that don't leave a foam and get the bottom of your legs wet, the ones you can jump over if you time it right. And then they die down to almost a calm sea, until the storm hits, and sometimes it's a storm you can ride out, and sometimes it's not. When it's not, I feel like the world is just so fucking cruel and I can't understand or accept that she had to go. I think of one of the memories that is etched in to my brain from when we had just found out she was poorly and I still lived a 5 minute walk away from her. I was driving home one day from somewhere (can't remember where) and Kovu wanted to see Nana, so I stopped off and Mum was in her dressing gown on the sofa. I opened the door as usual without a key, and Mum was smiling from ear to ear that we had dropped by because Kovu wanted a cuddle. We didn't stop long and as we were leaving Mum came to the door and sat on the door step in tears that she was going to miss all this. She actually said to me that she so desperately wanted to live and that it wasn't fair and I swear that day I died a little bit inside because it shouldn't have been happening to my Mum! When that memory rears it's ugly head I then get flooded with all the other memories that are so hard to re-live. Sometimes the good memories will come through and sometimes they make me smile, but most of the time they make me cry even more than the haunting memories, because I know there won't be anymore of these memories made.

However, although it doesn't seem like it but this is actually a very happy blog post and I'm glad I didn't write anything until this day because it makes it even more special. Mum has definitely had something to do with this announcement - and I whole-heartedly believe that!

Bubba #5 for our little blended family is due October (another October baby!!) and I know this one was specially picked by my Mum & Dad together - Dad was getting weary of picking them by himself!

So the boys all want a baby sister (another one to add to their blended family) and as always I'm just hoping she/he has 10 little fingers, 10 little toes, 2 chubby cheeks and a little button nose.

The only roller coaster I've ever enjoyed riding is my life!

Today has hurt.. all I've done all day is moan at the boys for being kids! I'm blaming the surge of hormones my poor body has had to endure because of this bloody implant! 😫
I think that's getting me down a little bit too! I know it's "the right thing" for us at the moment because adding another to our brood would stretch us financially and emotionally but it doesn't stop me being broody!! It's not just the hormones either, it hurts like a bitch! The doctor said ibuprofen is off the cards as a painkiller due to the possible issue of bleeding and I'm terrified of taking paracetamol because of the damage it can do to the liver so I'm just fighting through it which is no fun at all, so cue a mummy with a very short fuse!
I did manage to keep my mood at bay for the morning, making playdough for the boys and printing and laminating playdough mats for them, sorting a few "school type" activities and then making lunch. But in between it all I'm snapping at the boys for honestly just being kids and then I get into bed and ponder it all and get sad!
My Mummy and Greg did pop in this afternoon to see Kovu's bedroom and for a natter which put me in a better mood and then we took the boys to get their hair cut but then we had McDonald's for tea (because we got back late, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) but that ends up putting me in a bad mood again because I feel sluggish! #ihavenowillpower
So then I think ooo I know what will make me feel better, having the boys in bed with me and snuggling with a movie, mummy's pick! BAD IDEA! I picked Beauty and the Beast, why oh why would I pick that?! Feeling as emotional as I am that was a dumb move!!
I'm barely even watching it, scrolling through Facebook and trying to keep my mind off the pain in my arm and then THAT bit comes on and I'm bawling!!! It starts with Mrs Potts looking for Chip because he's run off again and it's right before they all turn into the pieces of furniture/appliances or whatever they are under the curse! This bit sets me off because it makes me think about my babies (I've always been waaaay too empathetic when it comes to movies, even animated, fantasy fairy tales I get right in to the characters 😂) and then I think about them growing up and that makes the tears stream down my face! And then Belle tells the Beast she loves him and the enchantress reverses the curse and the beast becomes a man and all my childhood feelings and memories come flooding in and I could fill a swimming pool with my tears! Mum does know this now but for years she didn't know that as a child I never understood why mum didn't just tell dad she loved him when he died so that he could come back to life and I was so sad that she wasn't with him in time. Now though it's even harder watching it because when I think back to how I felt as a child, it takes me back to watching all the Disney movies with mum curled up on the sofa under a blanket for a duvet day because we were all grieving for my dad. And then it hits me that I'm gonna have to lose my mum too and there's no childhood innocence to it this time around. I can't be the little one wrapped up in my mummy's arms and cuddled until I feel happy again because I'm the bloody adult this time around and it's my mum who's not gonna be there!!! That breaks me!
Seeing her today brings it all home a bit as well because I can pretend when I'm not physically around her that things aren't really that bad and that she's made it this far (10 months beyond her prognosis, flipping super woman!) so she's not actually that sick, but then I see her and see how fragile and weak (only physically, mentally she's a bloody ox!) she is and how old and tired she looks and reality comes crashing down! Eric gave her a cuddle today and as he did he brushed her arm which broke the skin and made her arm bleed and bruise under the skin literally in front of my eyes!! I've never seen anything like it!!! And it makes what is happening, very real.
As I've said before, I know I'm still extremely blessed, and even lucky I would say, because my Grandy, Grandpa and Greg are all going through so much worse, and mum herself of course!! But some days it really sucks and it really hurts! To think I won't have my mum or dad to run to when I feel like not being an adult because it gets a bit much sometimes! And yet there are people out there who could do without their parents so I do that horrible self pitying thing of asking why me?! And why my mum?? Why does she have to go through all of this shit?!?! I know that's not how it works and I despise self pity but some days are harder than others and this has ended up being one of those days! We were also discussing the 25th (this year it will be 24 years!) and what our plans were for my dads anniversary so that didn't help (I'm being really selfish this year and using the date to go on a family day out to West Midlands Safari Park but we do normally spend it just vegging with mum to mark the date) but I've decided this year I don't want to remember it. I don't want to think about it because I'm angry about it this year. The boys asked what my daddy looked like (they have seen pictures of him so they do know but we currently don't have any pictures of him up in the house because we haven't got round to putting all the pictures up yet, house in progress!) and when I found some pictures of him it hit me that he'll never get any older, he'll never look old and mum looks old before her time! Honestly where's the fairness in all this?!?!
Anyway I'm tired now, so I'll leave it there.. I think I feel a bit better for getting it out, I'll see in the morning! Here's to a better, less "bat-shit crazy mum" day!

This way

At Eric's Christening in Feb last year, my Nan asked the question, in not so many words: which way is worse, losing Dad the way we did or losing Mum the way we're going to?

Well I've been thinking on that question since that day last year. And today I can answer it.

This way is worse!

I don't know whether that's because I was only 4 when my Dad died so I just accepted it or whether it's because this way actually is worse.

People say "but when someone goes suddenly and unexpectedly you don't get chance to say goodbye." Very true. And I hate that fact (although Mum has told me that on the night Dad died he had tucked us 3 in and given us a kiss and said goodbye, I assume I said it back if I was awake and if I was asleep I assume I said goodnight when I went to bed, so I suppose I did say goodbye, I just didn't realise at the time that it would be the proper goodbye!) But this way we've been saying goodbye for too long. Since we were told about Mums prognosis, every time I say goodbye I hug a little tighter and hold on a little longer, just in case. You'd think this was a good thing, that I'm being given the chance to hug tighter and longer, but it's not. Because every time I do I wish I didn't have to!

Watching Mum deteriorate the way she has and then beat the odds the way she has, seeing her really good days and then some not so good moments (Greg is the one who sees it all and I don't envy him one bit!) keeps us all on this shitty emotional rollercoaster that we were put on, on the 4th January 2016.

I literally cannot explain how hard it is to look at my Mum now. I have set the memory of Mum at her 50th birthday in cement in my head because that's who my Mum is to me. That's how I want to remember her. I want to remember her as the Nana whose house we invaded for Kovu's 3rd birthday party (and the others, but this memory in particular) and filled her house with exotic animals.  I want to remember her as the Mum who fought my corner with my Uni accommodation, who fought my corner with a certain nursery who nearly destroyed my career before it even began, who taught me how to be assertive and independent because you're the crazy lady who drives to Cornwall and goes to see the Eden project on her own because her man said he didn't want to go anymore, who gave me roots and wings (teeny tiny wings but wings nonetheless!) who let us have duvet days when life got a bit much. There's so much more to my Mum than what is happening to her right now but I'm so scared this is what I'll remember. That her hands are so tiny my child size ring fell off her little finger when she took her shawl off. That her legs struggle to hold her tiny body up because there is no muscle left. That she is the shape of a Bergen because of her tummy (lol!). I don't want the memory of walking in to our home and seeing the figures packed in boxes with people's names on them to make it easier to sort things when she's gone. I don't want the memory of walking back from a quiz while on holiday in Cornwall to see my Mum heaving over the side of her wheelchair. I don't want the memory of watching my Mum having to crawl to the bathroom 8 feet away from her because she was in so much pain. I don't want the knowledge of what happened in that doctors room when my Mum was told her diagnosis. I don't want my boys going through a bereavement like this at the ages they are and then them ending up like me. I'm broken. And I don't want to watch my babies break too.

My hero has already surpassed the expectation of her prognosis but now her Macmillan nurse is talking about making arrangements for the future and we're all being hit by the reality again, and so now we're kind of preparing for the worst, again. We prepared for it last year and it didn't come so now it's like we have to readjust and prepare again.

You were supposed to be old. You were supposed to have a runaway room for my babies. You were supposed to be bag lady at Disney World when we all went back with our babies. You were supposed to carry on fish and chips once Grandy and Grandpa couldn't do it anymore.

For all of these reasons, I can promise you, this is harder.

And just like that.. He's too big

Struggling with this one.. I think I've struggled with most of my blog posts to be fair.

Recently I've been noticing more and more the things Kovu has stopped doing because he's "too big."

I was speaking to a parent at the school the other day and they were asking if my youngest still has a nap, I replied that he still has 2 during the day and then sleeps through the night so I'm not complaining! I still have him sleep on me for his naps in the day and I'm really savouring them at the minute because it makes it all more apparent that I don't do this with my 2 bigger boys anymore!

I've had to stop Kovu from riding on the front of the buggy because he makes it impossible to steer and that was hard to stop him from doing because it's just another teeny tiny milestone that's been reached.

He still comes into our bed in the mornings but now, instead of getting into the bed with us he curls up down the bottom with a blanket I purposely keep at the side of the bed for him because he is the last to come into the bed and he just doesn't fit. I wait for Daddy to get out of bed for work in the mornings so I can snuggle with the 3 of them, but by this point Kovu is watching netflix on my phone in Daddys spot, Romeo next to him, Eric next to him and me on the end snuggling my baby, trying for dear life to hold on to all 3 of them for a few moments more.

This is a quick one because I've got to go and get my big bub from school and Georgie is trying to tap away with me! But I suppose what I'm saying is: "life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it." Don't miss it, live it!

Why did I go into childcare?!

Been asked tonight what lead me to childcare, and loads of typical answers came to my head that are actually all rubbish!! No one goes into childcare for the money, cos there's no bloody money in it! Love of children, typical, broad, meaningless answer, etc etc.. I actually felt a bit stumped as to what my true answer was!! Runs in my family, wanted a big family so might as well get some relevant qualifications and experience for the future while earning money, bla bla.. I remember being at uni, watching cbeebies, squiglet to be precise, and I thought I really want to look after kiddies, yep that made me consider being a nursery nurse (I prefer that term to nursery practitioner - that doesn't sound warm enough!) but what was it that made me follow that path and actually enjoy it???
And then it clicked.. Even before I was a mummy myself, I empathised with the poor parents who had to work and leave their baby in a childcare setting. I wanted to make sure that the kiddies whose parents had to do this, felt love and warmth and laughter and kindness like they would in the arms of their mummies. If they could not be the ones who could rock them or stroke them to sleep for their nap, I would do it lovingly for them, if they could not be the ones to give their little one their breakfast, I would do it with a smile on my face, singing nursery rhymes to settle them in for the day. If they could not be the ones to take them outside to dig for treasure in the sand that day, or get really messy with some paint or baked beans or cornflour, I would do it and get messy with them!! I wanted the parents of the children I would care for to feel completely relaxed and happy that their child was in my care for the day. I wanted to show them that their child was happy in my care with loads of photos and personalised daily diaries, not the generic crap that is often produced!
Over the years I had forgotten this to a certain extent, in the way that I no longer felt that I wanted to be the one at work while somebody else looked after my children because (with the exception of a very few amount!) I haven't found a nursery nurse who I believe went into the profession for the same reasons as me! Now, as a parent, I believe even more that this is why I followed this path and I have been lucky enough to have felt that I did fulfil my reasons for going into this job! I have had one parent who was umming and arring about returning to work and what nursery/childcare setting she should leave her baby in, who, after having a chat with me actually went into the office at my setting and told the manager at the time that I was a big part of why she was choosing our nursery! That was such a massive boost to me at the time, that I was right where I was supposed to be, doing exactly what I was made for! Other parents I know have felt safe and secure and happy in the knowledge that their child is with me for the day from the feedback I got at my most favourite place to work. I'm not bragging I'm just feeling extremely overwhelmed tonight by the question I was asked and needed to write it all down!
All this has really made me look at going back to work in September with new (or rather my old!) eyes and views! I'm only going back for 2 days a week so my 3 will only need the before and after school club/longer days at pre school and days with auntie GG for 2 days out of a 5 day week, but in those 2 days when I am sent to a setting I'm going to remember my reasons for wanting to do this job and follow this path and I am going to love it!!

Letting go..

So I've been thinking about a certain concept that I just can't grasp, for a while now. I've spoken to 3 people about my issues but its something that's really hurting.

On the day mum messaged me, Gina and Dan to tell us the devastating news (before it became officially devastating and we found out it was terminal!) me and Gina were together because it was a Monday. Mum had had awful stomach pains in the morning and rang 999. A paramedic spoke to her and after being told mums symptoms and hearing mums cough on the phone he rang mums doctors and organised an appointment for that day. Mum went and was told it was likely to be secondary liver cancer. We obviously now know its primary liver cancer and is inoperable and incurable. Mums message told us to go to hers when we could without kiddies.. So me and G already knew something was up. We were going to be told something we didn't like. So in the very short car journey from mine to mums, me and GG rationalised that mums appointment at the doctors was not for another 2 days so it wasn't anything to do with her health (we didn't know what had gone on earlier that day). The reason for this meeting with us 3 without kiddies present was obviously because mum and Greg had decided to sell the house. There was NO other reason for this meeting.. There couldn't be.. Because mums doctors appointment wasn't for another 2 days! This is what we repeated and as we drove down our home street we were laughing (kind of nervously) at the fact that mum was #sellingthefuckinghouse!

Then we were told.. In a very tongue in cheek way by mum, we were going to be rich soon because she had cancer. Secondary liver cancer. Stupid doctor couldn't even get that right! And had told mum in such a cold manner that he should be struck off! For other things as well, this is the doctor who told me repeatedly that my 5 month old did not have a chest infection, when he did! And told me when I was having chest pains after Romeo was born, to come back if I started coughing up blood!!

So the issue that I can't get out of my head, I think partly because I'm trying to avoid thinking of other things, although this is probably one of the hardest things I think about, is our house, our home. Yep, welling up!

That house is SO special to us because it was the house mum and dad had seen being built and decided was their dream house. Corner plot with a massive garden backing on to beautiful fields, down a perfect cul-de-sac.

As you can imagine, so many of my memories are from that house..

I remember the day we moved in, I remember driving down the street to see our new house, big house, for the first time. I remember going in to the bedrooms with no carpets, just the grey cement floor and little numbers on the window frames, numbering the rooms in size order. Obviously mum and Laurie were having room number 1 with the en suite. Naturally I was supposed to have room number 2 at the back of the house, Gina number 3 and Dan number 4, both at the front of the house.

I remember the first night.. I was asleep on the floor on a mattress because we hadn't bought the bed yet. I had gone from sharing a double bed in 1 room with Gina and Dan, to my own bed in my own room. Me being me, I was a scaredy cat and couldn't deal with that big a change in the space I had all to myself, so I asked to swap rooms to the smaller room. Gina obliged of course because that's what middle children do! wink wink! And then, me being me, I got upset thinking I had missed out on the big room because of my fear.. So we swapped back.. And then, me being me, I got scared again and swapped back again!! If I remember rightly I wanted to continue this little back and forth routine, but after the 3rd swap, mum and Laurie decided enough was enough and I stayed in the smaller room at the front of the house!

I remember the first weekend we moved in was Gina's birthday weekend and mum made the most of the new garden, we had a stone/tarmac driveway before and that was it! So she hired a bouncy castle. I remember meeting 2 boys from down the street that weekend, Sam and Craig. Sam was 5 like GG and Craig was 7 like me. Then there was Kieran who was 3 like Dan.

I remember playing kiss chase with Sam and Craig in our back garden, I definitely ran faster from Sam than from Craig!

I remember Simon and Matty used to use our front garden and side of our house before we moved in as a place to play football. There was a worn patch on the grass from whoever was goalkeeper skidding on the grass to save the goals. I remember Laurie telling them they couldn't play there anymore because mum was gonna plant some trees.

I remember the douchebag who moved in next door not long after we moved in and mum planting hedges to separate the 2 gardens because the bloke was a weirdo!!

I remember the ice cream men, one italian man named Gino and one indian man, whose ice creams weren't as nice as Ginos so we always used to check which one it was before I sent out either Gina or Dan to save the van while me and the other one collected either our pocket money or begged mum to get us one!

I remember getting new bikes one Christmas and feeling so special!

I remember Sam and Craig writing on the walls by John and Cathys house "go home little girl" in an attempt to tell me to go back to the flat. That little girl nick name remained for me from Craig.

I remember "a pancake and a crep" (I know that's not how it's spelt, that's how me and Kieran used to say it!) at the sign post outside Kieran's house.

I remember Fiona, Kirsten and William at number 1 who none of us really liked but they used to help us gang up on Sam and James, power in numbers and all that.

I remember playing British Bulldog and Red Rover and Curby.

I remember pogs and pokemon cards.

I remember having to stay on the pink bits, not the black bits.

I remember walking down the shop and feeling so grown up that I could go with other kids, not adults.

I remember bbqs for the grown ups meaning we could all stay up late.

I remember turning 14 and falling in love with the boy next door, well 2 doors down but close enough.

I remember him and his mate climbing over our gate and sneaking into our playhouse when I had my mate over one night. I remember the punishment after that! We had to creosote the playhouse, and we turned it green! There's A LOT of similar memories connected to this person but if I went into all of them, I'd be here for another 3 hours writing them up! This is probably the most tame one of them all, plus a woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets so I'm keeping some for myself.

I remember 14 years worth of birthdays for me, Gina and Dan.

I remember proms and discos, and mums wedding to Greg.

I remember sitting up against John and Cathys garage with the Archway Crew, ordering pizza to the green box outside the street.

I remember fights and police.

I remember Christmasses and New Year Parties.

I remember getting drunk, a lot.

I remember summer holidays.

I remember laughter, and love, and life.

I honestly could write a book about all of the memories I made in that home.

And this is what I'm struggling with, really struggling with. It's the one thing that gets me crying every time I think of it, which is often! At some point in the not so distant future I am not going to be able to drive or walk down that street anymore. To see our home. The beautiful garden and bricks and mortar that hold so much of who I am. I won't be able to argue with the silly old woman next door about where our driveway ends and hers begins, or whose bloody bin is whose! I won't be able to slyly look up at Craigs old bedroom window, every time I go past his house. I won't be able to kick the stow away stones from peoples driveways down the drains. I won't be able to walk through our front door.  At some point our house, our home, will become somebody else's. I categorically cannot handle that! No one lived in that house before we did, and no one else should until we're all gone!!!

Oh and if anyone is wondering where the old sign went, I have it! :p I need it. To stop me from having to let go. Something I never want to do to the place I will always call home.

How it should be..

Struggling tonight.

Eric won't settle so I do what I always do and sing to him.. First song that always comes out is Any Dream Will Do from Joseph. It's the song Mum used to sing to me and it's without fail always the first song that comes easily to my head. I remember having nights after my Dad died when I wouldn't settle and Mum lay on our bed with us and stroked my hair singing this song. Because of how special this song is I now cry every time I sing it to one of my babies to settle them. (Thought this was cute so just adding it in, Eric is currently wiping my tears on my chin as he tries to stick his fingers in my mouth, something all 3 of mine have done when they're trying to keep themselves awake!)
So anyway, because I was crying I thought I'd find the song on YouTube and play it to Eric that way. And in doing this I found tickets for Joseph in June/July at MK. I went to book them online but then remembered Mum would probably need a wheelchair by then. So I have to ring to book. That, of course, is not a problem! What's upsetting is that it's gonna come to that..
My best friend sent me a picture today of a TimeHop with her Mummy and that hurt. I was sad that she was sad and then I remembered..
I don't want to be doing that! Not until I'm sixty fucking six!!!!

My Dad missed everything! EVERYTHING!! My first day of school, and everything beyond, Gina's hair hadn't even grown beyond her shoulders when he died, and he never saw Dan take his first mouthful of food or see his first tooth come through! He didn't see any of our teeth fall out, let alone any of the other things! Even Dans first Christmas for fucks sake!!
So Mum shouldn't have to miss a goddamn thing!!!!

My Grandma has seen her grandchildren (actually only me and G at the moment, but whatever) have kids of our own, something my Mum is never gonna see.

Mum won't even see the youngest of her own children have a baby.

Who the fuck decided that was the way it should be?!?!?!

My Dad missed everything so Mum didn't have to miss anything

My Dad missed everything so Mum didn't have to miss anything

My Dad missed everything so Mum didn't have to miss anything

So all of this is wrong.. Completely wrong. And shit. And shitty fucking bollucks shitty shitty shit shit

Opinions are like arse holes... Everyone has one, and that includes me!

What a weird week!
Since Wednesday my middle bub has been in a massive storm of terrible twos-ness! He calmed down yesterday!
My big boy had a settling in visit at his new pre-school, the one attached to the school he will (hopefully) be going to in September. And he had his last day at his old pre-school, the one he's been at on and off since he was 5 months old!!
My littlest bub has been a bit poorly, full of cold, and therefore really clingy which is unlike him.

One day this week, I can't remember which, the days roll in to one atm, I woke up and was greeted with an online news article about the gofundme page. Ooo exciting! And then not so much because the headline is something I just don't want to read. And then reading the full article was a bit heartbreaking because in my opinion it's not particularly sensitively written and there are bits in it that I didn't say, mum didn't say etc. I posted an update to clarify a few things but others have annoyed me too! Aydens surname was NOT supposed to be printed! I did not say "it's supposed to be the happiest day of your life" (that for me was, and always will be, the birth of my children!) mum did not say "real dad" that phrase really gets to me, because I don't have a real dad and a fake dad! I have a dad, who is not with us in body, but he is still my one and only dad!!!!!! My bridesmaid Leah was the one who had the idea for the page and actually had to convince me and G to set the page up! And finally there was no mention of Nick Coffer and his BBC 3 counties radio show, whose listeners make up such a massive amount of the total donations on the page, during the show we rocketed from £385 to £1400!! And then the donations continued and by the end of that weekend (the show was on a Friday) we had hit and exceeded the target and been offered everything we needed other than the venue (which we do now have!)
After the mirror printed the article, the metro did too and itv news online. Again the headline is awful for us to read! And is factually incorrect! It states that I am having mum walk me down the aisle, this is not, and never was, the case. After my dad died I wanted my uncle to walk me down the aisle as he was the closest thing I had to a dad. But this changed as I got older and his daughter got older. I wouldn't want to take that moment away from my cousin so I went for the next logical person in my mind which is my brother. He is my dads only son and all us 3 are extremely close so that worked for me. My mum walked my sister down the aisle and that worked for her. Mum is walking (or being wheeled) with us down the aisle but in terms of "giving me away" that is my brother. The itv news post received a selection of comments, most lovely ones expressing their support and positive thoughts, but a few were negative. I am not stupid or naive! I knew there would be some who disliked what we were doing, so I expected these comments, just like I expected them on the gofundme page and the gofundme Facebook post. However, that doesn't make reading them any easier. And the little dog syndrome I suffer from means I really want to answer them!!! If they are allowed to express their opinion why am I not allowed to reply?! That is what I will never understand about people who defend the negative comments, they say it's ok for this person to express their opinion but then don't think it's ok for me to express mine in replying to them!!! What?!?!
So instead, I say a few comments and then get told to stop! This is what I need because otherwise I get more and more angry (I was angry crying yesterday after reading one comment and not being able to reply!) so I am going to reply to them on here! 😁
1. I have not asked a single person to donate! Everyone who has donated has done so because they have chosen to click on that donate button!
2. I am so grateful to everyone, the gratefulness flows out of my eyes every time there's a new donation or loving comment or message!
3. In terms of donating the money to cancer research I have a few things to say, and please bear in mind this is my blog and my outlet for the negative feelings I have so that I don't carry them around with me, if you have a negative opinion on this please feel free to express it and I will probably respond with another blog expressing my feelings on your negative feelings 😂 So my response to that is first and foremost, I never gave to cancer research before (other than when I ran/walked the race for life) because I donate when I can to other causes. Guide dogs, wwf, Keech cottage, great ormand street, road victims trust, Millie's trust and anything that jumps out at me at being a good cause in my eyes, so why would I pick that as the charity of my choice now?
Secondly, and this is straight from the heart, fat lot of good cancer research is going to do for me now, in terms of mum! 8-11 months takes us to October-January and I'd rather make amazing memories with mum in that time than take a chance on a few thousand making a big enough difference to cure mum in that time! Peoples donations have also been made with the intention of helping us pay for our wedding, they haven't given that money for anything else, and that includes cancer research!! Everyone who donated after we reached the target was fully aware they were donating more than the target and as far as I'm aware none of those people expect us to donate the money to cancer research!!
Thirdly, I am nearing the end of month off March, where I gave up chocolate and Coke and people sponsored me to do so and the money is going to cancer research. I am also running the muddy fun run with my best friend in July and the money we raise from that will be going to cancer research too. So I'm not not doing anything for cancer research!! Kovu and Romeo also donate 10% of their pocket money every month to cancer research! Me and G are currently learning to knit so that we can knit clothes for the neonatal unit at Bedford because of how much they have helped us with my big bub and my baby bub. Me and Ayden also want to donate a cot to the neonatal unit when we can. And when we are in a position to do so, my sister and I have a little something extra up our sleeve for the staff at the hospital. Me and Ayden will also be setting up a regular donation to a number of charities when we are in a position to do so but at the moment we have 3 young boys to raise and I am on maternity leave!! So we are not in that position right now!! Also the comment that made me cry with anger because I couldn't reply was one very simple sentence from one person that said "wouldn't it be better to give the money to cancer research" and her profile picture was her at her wedding! The main person with the most negative comments profile picture was also her at her wedding!! And my response to them is actually no! Like I've said, fat lot of good that money would be to cancer research now for mum!! The money from your wedding however, may well have been better spent there because you obviously got married before mum was given her diagnosis and they may have been able to find the cure with the money from your weddings!! Did anyone tell you the money for your wedding would have been better spent elsewhere?! I will assume not! So why do they feel they can put a negative spin on people's generosity to us at this totally shitty time!!! I feel like they are taking away the kindness of all these people and that breaks me!
But now I'm done reading the comments from these people and I'm done harbouring on the articles themselves. We're crashing g n js family trip to ikea today (they don't know we're crashing it yet!) and we're going to have a lovely bank holiday Monday!
So again thank you so bloody much to every single one of the people who have donated, offered support, services, items and kind words!!!!! I will never be able to express just how grateful we are!!!
Lots of love xxxx

I can't do this!

I'm in bits tonight. The past week has been completely surreal. I have no words to express how I feel and my gratitude to every single person who has donated, offered a service and offered their kind, heartfelt words.
My emotions are all over the place atm.. My head is everywhere and my thoughts are scattered! I am attempting to organise a wedding in 4 months, this process has been eased a great deal by everyone's generosity!!
But after my high points come the lowest points I've ever felt.. The reality hits me in the face like Mike Tyson with a knuckle duster. I feel sick, heartbroken, completely useless and as if I'm never gonna smile again!
Losing a parent is devastating. But it is the natural order. But not this young!! My mum should have another 40 years left. To grow old disgracefully! My mum is not just one parent either. She's both of ours and has been for 23 years. I can't cope without her. She's who I run to for everything!! And not just her kids run to her. So many of my friends run to her too. I can't do this.

When you're told to sit down..

Why is it when someone has big, normally bad, news to tell you, they tell you to sit down?! I want to stand, then I can move the negative energy from my mind to my shifting feet. But instead, when you're sat down, you can't get up once you've heard whatever news it is. And because you can't get up you can't run away, and because you can't run away and pretend you weren't told that news, it crushes you like a thousand 18 wheelers have just run you over.

That's what happened on Monday.

My mum, my hero, the super human-being who raised me and my brother and sister by herself, my rock, my beautiful, inspirational, loving, caring, understanding, perfect, beautiful mother, has cancer. Fucking shitty fucking bollucks licking shitty fucking cancer.

The different reactions are not surprising.. Not in my family.. We all know each other so well we know who needs what to help them take this news in.
I'm not saying "cope" or "deal with" because I don't think it's a case of coping or dealing with this!
It's a case of taking it in and moving forward.. Keep moving forward as Walt Disney so wisely said.
Or at least that's what I'm doing! I never allowed myself to think of this scenario ever rearing its very ugly head but I've gone into mummy mode, for everyone. And that suits me just fine. From the age of 4 (I know now just how really young that is because of my biggest baby) I gave myself a mummy role over G and Dan. So that's how I "dealt with" that life curveball. This one, I'm doing the same, only this time I can mother my mother too!

If I'm gonna speak uncensored and without fear of judgement, which is what I use this for, I'll tell you the complete truth.. This bit's raw mum so if you're reading grab your roll of tissue. I'm not looking at mums diagnosis as her death sentence, my brother asked her when he was told if she's been given a time and that does tend to be people's first query, not that they come out and ask that! But I wouldn't take a doctors timescale as a death sentence even if one was given in this situation. We are all given a death sentence from the second we are born. And NO ONE is promised a tomorrow, EVER. But what pisses me off, angers me, fucks my head up, does my nut in, grinds my gears, however you want to put it, is that my mum, my wonderful mum, has to hurt. My dad hurt before he died, granted it wasn't for very long, but he would have felt pain, as the report so eloquently put it. I didn't know this fact until 6 years ago and by then my dad had already been gone 16 years. So it hit hard, but not devastatingly.
My mum suffering the way she has been for the last 3 months is devastating enough, but to now know that she has to undergo more of this SHIT, fucking hurts. It hurts my head, it hurts my heart, and it bloody well hurts my eyes from all the stinging after the tears.

I cry for what my mum has to go through, I cry for my grandparents, I cry for my brother and sister, I cry for my Ayden who genuinely thinks of my mum as his mum, I cry for Greg, I cry for my babies and my niece, and I cry for me. But like I said I'm in full mummy mode so I cry at night, and at night only. My babies are too young to know anything other than Nana's poorly and will be for a little bit longer so spending my day crying would not be healthy for them. However, for those who can cry without it having a negative affect on a littlun I would say go ahead! From the minute we are born, crying is a sign of life!

Grab life and don't take your health for granted! One of the first things I notice when I get a blocked nose is how much I took breathing through both nostrils for granted! Well I don't anymore! I wake up and breathe in life! Then smile, a good attitude and hope will get this family through this shit!

Love you mum x

A Bit Of A Downer

So I've just picked Kovu up from pre-school and I feel a bit sad. I'm going back to work in January and so the boys are coming with me, full time (term time only but still full weeks). This in itself makes me sad because I'm not going to be with them as much as I'd like, but it's something that has to be done. So that's made me sad to begin with, and then we got home, put the Christmas CD on and are making cakes and it started to cheer me up, I love Christmas, in case you didn't know, December is my ultimate favourite month, but my cheeriness didn't last all that long before I realised I actually don't remember a Christmas with my Dad.

The first Christmas I remember is the one just after he died. Mum had her friend stay over and when we woke up she told us that she had heard Santa's reindeer on the roof so he must have been and left us presents. I don't know if she remembers this but it is a memory I hold very dear, because I was convinced I had heard them too!

I remember coming downstairs and seeing Mums big smile. How did my Mum smile that Christmas? How could she possibly muster the will to smile that Christmas? How did she put up the tree and the (minimal) decorations we had? How did she not end up making that Christmas a miserable one? How did she make it a happy Christmas memory for me. GG and Dan won't remember it because they were far too young, it was Dan's first Christmas. I cannot imagine the heart break my Mum felt that year.

I've had one hard Christmas and that was 2011, it should have been one of my best because it was my first Christmas with my big boy, but because of some silly little girl deciding December was a good month to tear my world apart, it was bloody hard to put on the smile that year. But middle finger to her wanting to destroy me, nothing she could ever throw at me could, because I look up to my hero, my Mum, and if she can make my first Christmas memory a happy one that year, then I could certainly make my baby's first Christmas a Christmas with smiles. I look back at photos of that Christmas and last Christmas, Romeos's first Christmas, and I can see the difference in my smile, it was real last year, and my eyes weren't sad anymore. I'm sure if Mum did the same she could tell when her smile became real again around this time of year.

It'll always be hard, but every year a different little thing will grab at my heart and crush it a little bit. This year it's the revelation that I don't have a Christmas memory with my Dad, and the fact that he's not going to get to watch Kovu in his first Nativity Play next week.

He's not going to get to ever see any of his Grandkids in a Nativity Play, or watch them rip open their presents or pull a cracker with any of them or hear them laugh at his Christmas cracker joke. He'll never get to see the New Year in with them, or us. I don't know what he was like when he was drunk, I don't know how bad his singing was when he'd had too many, I don't know what his best Christmas memory was, I'll never know. People can tell me stories about him but that isn't enough. It never is.

I'm hurting today.

But the boys are playing dinosaurs and making me laugh, as always, and I will ALWAYS make their Christmases as special as my Mum did, every year, for us!

Adding to my Panic Attack post

I was lying in bed last night, and I had started thinking about "what if I forget how to breathe."
I was able to stop this thought because it took me back to a memory. An important memory that I have only JUST been able to connect to my panic attacks. This is where and when it all started! And I hadn't known it until literally last night. I've obviously remembered this memory and thought about it before last night on a few occasions because it's a scary memory, but one with a, kind of, happy undertone.
I was 5/6/7 I can't remember exactly how old, maybe mum remembers?
We were still in the flat, and Dad was no longer with us. (Which is what has allowed me to narrow it down to that age range.)
Us 3 were in bed and mum was downstairs.
What I remember is looking at the lightbulb and beginning to worry that it would never turn on again, I was worrying about how it worked and the fact that I didn't know how it worked, much like how my panic attacks start nowadays. The lack of control or knowledge over the ins and outs of things. (Buildings falling down because I don't understand the structure and how they are put together, how do the massive buildings in London stay up even with shops at the bottom of them with just glass fronts holding them up?!?!?!?! But I'm not going in to that because that's how I'll start one off!)
Then moving on from my lightbulb fear, I thought I might forget how to breathe. And then my breathing got very shallow and hard and I was having to think about breathing in and out. I was having to (or thought I was having to) manually think about how to breathe. I remember running to the top of the stairs with blurry vision honestly thinking I was going to die.
The next thing I remember is mum holding me on our landing with that massive white chest of drawers/changing top/general dumping ground, and breathing in and out with me until I calmed down. I don't have a memory of calming down or getting back in to bed but I remember the panic attack. The first panic attack I ever had and I've only just made the connection and the realisation that it was a panic attack! About a bloody light bulb!!!

Panic Attacks

I've been suffering from panic attacks since I was 14. I'm not really sure that there was a trigger for it, maybe just growing up, but I'm certain they stem from my Dads fatal car crash, like a delayed response.
There is no pattern, as such, as to when I have one, but they do tend to follow the same themes, for example, it'll be a windy night and I'll start thinking about the house collapsing. Ridiculous, I know, but at the time of me thinking it, it's not ridiculous and it's a very real threat!
I've had some years where the panic attacks are rare, maybe once a year, and then I'll have a year, like this year, where they just keep coming and lasting longer, and creating even more worry, because I'm worrying about worrying!!!
I am very lucky, as I've mentioned before, in that my family, as ever, is always supportive, and offer words of advice and just a shoulder to cry on, or an ear to bend if I need to go through things with them. The trouble is that, when I'm not panicking, they can tell me over and over again the things that will calm me down, but when I'm having a panic attack, these calming words don't make a blind bit of difference!!
When I'm in that panic mode I just have to concentrate on my breathing! Literally - In and Out, In and Out, once I've calmed my breathing down I can start to count. That then makes my mind concentrate on something other than whatever it is I've thought about to bring it on, and will, eventually, calm me completely. I can think of the specific things that bring on my panic attacks without always having one, which makes it harder to determine when I'm going to have one. If it was the case that, when I think of a certain thing I will have a panic attack I could try to control it by not thinking of whatever it is at all, but it doesn't work like that, unfortunately. Even when I'm talking about what I've had an attack about I can see that it's always an irrational thought or fear, but it doesn't matter when I'm panicking, how ridiculously far fetched the worry is!
So I've got Kalmz to take 3 times daily, and a relief spray to use when I can feel one coming on (although they always happen so quickly that I can't actually stop them!) but I often forget to take them, and also find it difficult to take them because they make me so sleepy. (my Auntie Karen also suggested that the tiredness probably comes from the worry itself as well, and having 2 little boys to run around after of course!) I used to take Kalmz when I was at school and uni to keep the attacks at bay, but I'm finding they're not really working anymore, I think I was more accepting when I was younger, that they would help, now I'm worrying that they won't and I'll still have panic attacks, which makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy!!
I've had suggestions from a lot of people (mainly my Mum and my sister) but never thought about writing the panic attack triggering thoughts down!! (This really should have been thought of long before now, 11 years on, but it just didn't cross my mind!) So on Wednesday (our tradition of going to Auntie Karens for tea) Karen suggested I write these thoughts down to get them out of my head and on to paper! DUH!!! So this is exactly what I'm going to do from now on! It's going to be a massively long list of things because I worry and panic about things no sane person would! It frustrates me, and the last one I had I was crying to G, asking why she doesn't get them? Why doesn't she think the same things as me?
I'll give you a very brief insight into a typical day for me:
I wake up/stop dozing because I don't really sleep because of thoughts racing round my head. If either boy is not in the bed with me I panic that they've stopped breathing in their sleep or they've suffocated under their duvet/pillow/teddy or if it's K, that he's got himself wedged between his bed and the bed guard and suffocated that way (which isn't possible but I still think it!)
I then go in to check on them or whichever one it is that hasn't got into my bed throughout the night. When I realise they are fine, I've already woken them up so we start the day. I triple check that the stair gate is closed because I'm terrified one of them will fall down the stairs and break their neck or smash their head. Then we get ready amongst other worries like they'll fall off the bed and break a bone while I'm brushing my teeth and they are jumping on my bed (typical morning!) I will just add here that I won't stop them doing this or certain other things that make me panic because I understand they are boys, and they are children and I would NEVER want them to suffer because of my worries.
We go on with our day, if it's a pre-school day for K I'll panic that I haven't put enough clothes on them to keep them warm and stop them getting a cold or the flu, or that I've put too many on them and they'll get too hot. I am aware that these things are not going to kill them (at least not directly) and I have got common sense and a flipping level 4 qualification in childcare, but it doesn't mean these worries don't raise their ugly heads!
I then get home and do some form of activity with R, all the while worrying that K will get hurt or be upset while I'm not with him. Then R goes for a sleep, wakes up and has lunch, at this point I worry about R choking, which then makes me worry about K choking at pre-school and no one realising!! I am counting down the minutes until we pick up K and then when I get him home I do another activity  with them both.
The day goes on like this and by the time the boys are in bed I then worry about how the day has gone, if I have done enough with them, stressed at them at all, handled situations the right way with them, if they have full bellies, have had enough to drink throughout the day so they don't wake up with headaches, if K has had too much to drink before bed and is going to wet the bed or not, and if they've gone to sleep happy and with nice dreams. (I'm going to be a wreck when they have their first nightmare!)
This doesn't cover the other worries I'll have if they have been playing rough with Daddy, Uncle Dan Dan, Uncle Jamie etc. If they do a roly poly I panic they will break their neck, if one of my horrible family members (who I swear do it on purpose :p) have been throwing either of them up and down and swinging them round, or even just putting them on their shoulders, I worry that they'll drop them, they'll hit their head and then bleed internally or be disabled from a head injury!
I realise these are over protective thoughts and so only stop them from doing these things if I've got to the point where I can't keep the panic away but I really do try to stop having these thoughts and worrying about stupid things that I shouldn't let worry me!!
I think it boils down to one thing, control. If I don't have control over something, I tend to start worrying about it which then can lead to a panic attack if I can't shift the fear.
Ebola and ISIS have been two things recently that I've really had to work on to stop a panic attack coming from the thoughts about either of them.
But some things are so deeply in my head that I can't even work on them.
I will stress here, that at no point have I ever had a panic attack in front of my boys, they tend to overwhelm me at night when the boys are safely tucked up in bed, thankfully.
The reason my panic attacks stem from my Dads car crash is that I am constantly aware and thinking of the fact that it takes a simple second for your whole life to change, or end! And it doesn't have to be your doing either! I have been driven around in a car by someone who was speeding and I have said to them to slow down and their response was "it's okay, I know these roads like the back of my hand!" My response to that was  "You might, but someone else might not, or a deer/rabbit/fox could run in front of you, then what?!" I've heard on so many occasions the phrase "I would never endanger you/the boys etc" and my thoughts on that phrase is that no one would.... intentionally! But my Dad didn't endanger himself intentionally either! It was another drivers fault, another drivers mistake. Even if it had been my Dads mistake, that split second, that single decision determined the rest of his life, and ours. No one thinks like this.
But I do!
